Classical Indian dance traditionally commences with an invocatory song praying to Lord Ganesha, the elephant head God to grace the occasion with his blessings and remove all obstacles incurred. This is an intricate piece with brisk foot work in praise of Lord Ganesha in his dancing form and speaks of his glory as the primordial force in all the three worlds. He is the older brother of Lord Karthikeya, also called Muruga and the nephew of Lord Vishnu. The poet requests Lord Vinayaka, who is in the form of “Om” or as the Pranava Swaroopa to listen to his pleas and requests with utmost kindness to protect him at this very moment. He is amazed by Ganesha’s magnificent dance with 5 arms which includes his trunk. Ganesha, the kind and compassionate one, blesses his devotees with utmost bliss, wisdom and relieves them from the bondage from the cycle of birth and death. He is praised by everyone from all directions.
