In a Bharatanatyam Margam or repertoire the dancer introduces Expressions or Abhinaya for the first time. The Abhinaya’s are composed of simple sahityams or lyrics separated by easy korvais. This is a Shabdam in praise of Lord Muruga. The birth of Lord Muruga is described vividly. He was born out of Shiva’s third eye when he burns Kaama, the Cupid God. Six fiery sparks from his divine energy fell into the sacred lake as drops of celestial fire. From them was born Muruga, the six-faced divine child. Goddess Parvati gathered the radiant and beautiful Muruga into her loving embrace, cradling him tenderly in her lap.

 Muruga is the Lord of Tamil Literature who is as sweet as honey. His radiant form glows with a harmonious blend of red and green. His dark, graceful eyebrows frame his face, and a beautiful red tilak adorns his forehead. Muruga intoxicates everyone with his charming smile and beauty.  He is married to Devayanai, daughter of Indra and Valli, the Kurathi girl. Muruga tests Valli’s devotion and comes as an old man and pretends to harass her to marry him. Valli stands strong in her conviction. But eventually yields to the old man, in fear of the huge mad elephant standing before her. Muruga appears in his true form and marries Valli. Muruga rides majestically on his vehicle, the peacock and blesses everyone who seeks HIS refuge.
